Commissioner hire counsel for commercial tax appeals
Reassessment is underway in Warren County for the first time since the late 1980s.
But that hasn’t stopped the flow of commercial property tax assessment appeals that have been successfully sought in county court in recent years.
The county commissioners on Wednesday approved an agreement with the Erie-based Knox Law Firm for representation on appeals from three companies – Aldi, Lowes and Whirley.
Commissioner Tricia Durbin said that Knox would be the entity representing both the county and the school district as part of the appeal process.
Solicitor Nathaniel Schmidt said that while the agreement is currently between the firm, the county and the school district, the city may also become party to the agreement for the Whirley appeal.
Schmidt told the commissioners he has also been in contact with the firm about representing the county “on one or two other assessment appeals. Those agreements will be forthcoming.”
Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said this move is in line with how these appeals have been conducted for the past few years.
The commissioners on Wednesday also approved an agreement with the Grand Valley VFD for the continued lease of a radio tower site.
“We have been in possession of the Grand Valley tower,” Public Safety Director Ken McCorrison said, since about 2012.
However, he said there was never a written agreement entered in order to solidify the arrangement.
