State police release holiday weekend traffic enforcement data

Alcohol-related crashes investigated by Pennsylvania State Police increased more than 50% over last year during this year’s Thanksgiving holiday period.

Officials released the annual Thanksgiving holiday enforcement report this week showing 73 alcohol-related crashes statewide, compared to 48 in 2022. Only one of those crashes was in the region, according to data on PSP Troop E, which covers Crawford, Erie and Venango counties and most of Warren County.

A total of 979 crashes resulting in four fatalities were reported. Last year, 970 crashes resulting in one fatality were reported. Regionally, 48 crashes and no fatalities were reported this year.

A total of 197 people were injured in crashes this year, as compared to 196 last year. Regionally, ten injuries were reported by Troop E.

Statewide, 542 individuals were cited for driving under the influence. Of that total, 33 were reported by Troop E. Last year, 539 DUIs were reported statewide.

No alcohol-related fatal crashes were reported in the last two years.

Data covers the period from Wednesday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 26. It does not include incidents to which other law enforcement agencies responded.

“The goal of the Pennsylvania State Police during the Thanksgiving holiday was to save lives and reduce fatal crashes through enforcement efforts and education,” PSP Troop E Community Service Officer Cindy Schick said. “Members were able to obtain this goal by being proactive during the 5 day holiday period.”
