Warren man behind bars after weekend chase

A Warren man is behind bars after he fled from police early Saturday morning at speeds exceeding 90 mph in a 35 mph zone.

Alexander S. Peterson, 32, 4 1/2 Sixth Ave., was charged by Warren-based Pennsylvania State Police in the wake of the incident which occurred around 3 a.m.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed with District Judge Todd Woodin’s office, troopers were running radar when a vehicle was observed on Route 62 just north of Seventh Avenue in the City of Warren driving 57 mph in a 45 zone.

Troopers pulled out behind the vehicle “and observed the vehicle immediately accelerate,” the affidavit alleges. “The vehicle turned right onto South State Street, Conewango Township and traveled at a high rate of speed in excess of 90 mph.”

According to the affidavit, the pursuit continued to Mapleleaf Place when the subject vehicle turned into a residential driveway.

Troopers say they “observed the driver jump out of the vehicle and flee westbound on foot.” The affidavit alleges that police followed Peterson for several hundred yards before they “laid on the ground stomach down and complied with further instructions.”

That’s when troopers were able to identify Peterson who allegedly told police he “was drunk and didn’t want a DUI. Peterson had a strong odor of alcohol coming from his person and had defecated himself,” the affidavit alleges.

Troopers report observing open cans of Yuengling and open bottles of Corona inside the vehicle, as well as a “green glass pipe with suspected marijuana residue.”

Peterson was taken into custody, first to Warren General Hospital for a blood draw and then to the county jail after he was unable to post $25,000 bail.

Online court records show that he faces charges including fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, DUI, evading arrest or detention on foot and possession of drug paraphernalia in addition to nine summary traffic violations.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.
