Crary seeking entries for ‘ANF100’ centennial exhibition

The Allegheny National Forest turns 100 this year, and the Crary Art Gallery is jumping into the celebration.

A wide range of artists — painters, illustrators, photographers, mixed media and other two-dimensional artists — are called to submit works inspired by the ANF for “ANF100,” a juried exhibition set for Sept. 22-24.

The window for entries will run through July 16.

“As a transplant in the Allegheny National Forest area, coordinating this juried exhibition has given me the space to know more about the history and land that I currently call home,” Adrienne Grimes, Crary board member and exhibition coordinator said.

“I’m excited to help bring an opportunity to this area that highlights the beauty of our national forest and the art it inspires every day.”

Artists will be able to submit up to three works using a form that can be found at craryartgallery.org/anf100.

There will be guidelines regarding size and weight but the focus on the ANF — plants, vegetation, wood, watersheds, recreation, people, wildlife, heritage and oil and gas — is key.

Artists will be asked to provide the location and, if possible, coordinates for the location that inspired the works.

The works will be turned over after the July deadline to guest juror Laura Domencic, the securite director of the Erie Art Museum.

That will set the stage for the exhibition in September, which will kick off with an opening reception on Friday, Sept. 22, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Students in all high schools in the four counties that make up the ANF — Elk, Forest, McKean and Warren — have also been invited to submit a collective art piece for the exhibition. To date, seven high schools have agreed to participate.

Starting at $3.50/week.
