Study shows Forest County with lowest cost of living in state
Warren County’s neighbor to the south — Forest County — has the lowest cost of living in the state of Pennsylvania.
That’s according to a smartasset.com study that relies on data from MIT and multiple federal agencies.
The study calculated “baseline cost of living” for one person with no dependents while another metric “reflected expenditures typical to someone making the county’s median income,” according to a statement.
The two numbers were then combined while subtracting income taxes.
According to that review, Forest County was the only county in the state with a cost of living under $30,000. That, however, outstrips per capita income
Several neighboring counties can also be found in the top 10 — McKean in fifth, Crawford in sixth. Tioga, a couple to the east, comes in eighth.
This methodology places Warren County 20th, with a per capita income of $46,793 and a cost of living valued at $35,206.
The review also included a look at per capita income — unsurprisingly dominated by counties in the southeast and southwest — and purchasing power — also centered in those areas.
There’s some evidence, though, that the cost of living increases we’ve seen from supply chain and inflationary issues may be abating.
The most recent data available from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics a 0.1% increase in the consumer price index for November, mostly driven by a 2.2% increase in the energy sector.
That data shows that food prices rose 0.2%, the smallest increase since May 2021 and below the peak spike of 1.3% in July 2022.
On the energy side, gasoline prices rose 4.8% in November in the wake of a four-month decline. Household gas service rose 1.2% while electricity ticked up by 0.1%.
