Troopers highlight scam that impersonates station commander

Local Pennsylvania State police want to warn the public about a new scam that involves the impersonation of the state police themselves.

Trooper James Andrews told the Times Observer that Troopers have “been made aware of a phone scam where actors are impersonating the station commander” at the Starbrick barracks, Sgt. Brian Hamilton.

“These actors,” Andrews explained, “are requesting individuals buy ‘Green Dot’ gift cards for substantial amounts to avoid being taken into custody for outstanding warrants.”

State Police stress that law enforcement agencies, themselves included, will not asking people to pay for anything over the phone.

“Please be vigilant regarding phone scams,” Andrews said, “especially ones involving the purchase of gift cards. Do not provide personal information over the phone.”
