3 new COVID deaths reported; county nears most cases in any month

With several days to go, January 2022 has tied December 2020 as the month with the most new cases of COVID-19 in Warren County.

Over the past two days, the Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 79 new cases – 42 in Thursday’s report and 37 in Friday’s.

There have been 1,171 cases so far this month and 6,783 total.

There were three deaths added to the COVID toll in the past two days, bringing that total to 15 for the month and 195 in all. There were 65 COVID-related deaths reported in January 2021 – easily the highest of any month.

As of Friday, the county’s positivity rate was 19.23, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That means 19.23 percent of COVID tests administered were positive.

Vaccinations in the county have leveled off.

There have been 17,553 county residents fully vaccinated, according to the department. Another 3,096 have been partially vaccinated. So far, 8,368 have received additional shots – including boosters.

This month, fewer than 400 more people have been fully vaccinated. Over 7,000 residents received their second dose (or single dose of the Johnson and Johnson vaccine) in April and May.

The department’s vaccination numbers work out to about 45 percent of the county population, or about 48 percent if those under 5 years old are excluded from the calculation.

New statistics were released by the department on Friday regarding the number of children who have contracted COVID-19.

During the week of Jan. 19, there were 13 county cases in children under 5 and 52 among school-age children.
