Tournament to honor Caleb Hultman, help track athletes

Caleb Hultman

The family of Caleb Hultman is honoring his life and memory with a softball tournament to benefit track athletes.

The second annual Caleb Hultman Memorial Softball Tournament will be held Sept. 4 and 5 at Betts Park.

“Caleb died as a result of a work accident June 27, 2020, in St. Marys,” his father, Steve Hultman, said. “He was an organ donor. His donations helped five people — many got a second chance on life because of his donations.”

“He was a loving and generous young man who would help anyone who asked and never asked for anything in return,” he said.

“Caleb’s love of running started when he was 8 years old and he ran in the Cinco de Mayo 5K with his buddy, Danny Lympus,” Caleb’s mother, Pam Hultman, said. “He loved running with the Warren High track team.”

“He was a stand-out cross country and track athlete at Warren Area High School,” Steve Hultman said. “He still holds the record for the 800 meter run and his 4×4 relay team still holds the WAHS record. They were three-time District 10 Champs and competed at state championships.”

“He was encouraged and inspired by his coach, Justin Norris,” Pam Hultman said. “His 4×4 team of himself, Jordan Willets, Luke Wortman and Tanner Rosenberg, and Ryan Shattuck for some races, provided a lot of excitement for the team and the fans.”

“When he went to college there weren’t many track scholarships and we would like to help others that love running as much as Caleb did,” she said.

The scholarship fund is intended to help those who plan to continue with track in college as well as support those who might otherwise be unable to participate in high school due to the expenses involved.

Caleb was also an avid softball player, participating in local leagues and tournaments.

“Caleb was a very passionate softball player,” Steve Hultman said. “He was loved by his teammates and Caleb loved them and their families as well.”

“He was famous for his purple and yellow striped ball pants,” Pam Hultman said.

On Saturday, there will be a co-ed tournaments. There will be a men’s tournament on Sunday. The cost to enter a team is $200.

“We ask that players and the community come down to the softball tournament to support this event,” Steve Hultman said. “All proceeds will help fund the scholarship.”

The inaugural tournament was a success despite being put together less than three months after Caleb’s death and restricted by COVID-19. “We were so grateful for the love and support from the community,” Pam Hultman said.

Registration for the tournament is being handled through the event’s Facebook page.

Donations may be made payable to Caleb Hultman Memorial Scholarship Fund: C/O Stephen Hultman, 47 Arlington Dr, Warren, PA 16365.

There will be raffles and a home run derby during the tournament and all proceeds will benefit the fund.
