Fall tree planting plans are heard by city panel

About 50 new trees will be planted in the City of Warren later this week.

And some of those plantings will be in a prominent downtown location that hasn’t had tree cover for several years.

City Arborist Joe Reinke said crews will be picking up the trees for the city’s fall planting at the nursery on Wednesday and will plant the majority of the trees on Thursday.

A total of 49 trees will be planted with 40 going into street rights of ways throughout the city.

Six of the remaining nine trees will be planted at Lacy Park.

Reinke said a couple will be planted near both the playground as well as the pavilion at the park with four circling the stormwater retention pond.

He said a total of eight trees will encircle the pond. Ten additional trees – species that don’t handle fall planting well – will be planted at Lacy next spring.

“The majority of them are going on the fringes of the park,” he said, keeping the current field open as “greenspace for future projects.

City Manager Nancy Freenock said that could include a t-ball field and additional playground equipment in the future.

Four of the planting boxes along the north side of the 400 block of Pennsylvania Ave. W. will also be planted.

Reinke said it’s been five years since the last trees were removed from that stretch, leaving the seven or eight planting boxes open.

Four will be planted this week with a dwarf maple species that Reinke said has a “real, real bright red autumn leaf.

“The trees that are going in there are pretty hearty trees,” he said. “Very salt tolerant.”

He said some compost would be added to the planting locations but said the trees “should do alright with what’s in there.”

Centennial approaching

City Planner David Hildebrand told the committee that the 100th anniversary of the creation of its preceding body is next year.

He explained that the city Parks Commision and Shade Tree Commission were created on July 11, 1921.

“I don’t think a lot of people realize that some of the commissions, committees we have have been around as long as they have,” he said.

The current committee was created in the mid-to-late 1980s.

Committee seeking members

The committee can have over 10 members but currently has five.

And it’s looking for members.

Anyone interested in joining is asked to contact the City of Warren at 723-6300 ext. 112.
