2 polling places to be relocated

Two polling places will move while one will remain unchanged for the upcoming election as a result of decisions made Wednesday by the Warren County Board of Elections.

Polling places in Eldred Township and Farmington Township are the ones to be moved.

Elections Director Lisa Rivett told the board — comprised of the three Warren County Commissioners — that the Eldred precinct has been located at the garage of the township building and that a request was made to move it to the Grand Valley Fire Hall.

Rivett said the fire hall would provide more — and warmer — space and likely improved handicap accessibility.

In Farmington, the precinct is located at the Lander Fire Hall and Rivett said the fire hall has moved from Miller Hill Rd. to the former Chase Auctions location on Rt. 957. She said the polling place would remain at the fire hall’s new location.

Rivett told the board that elections officials with the Warren South precinct “for whatever reason don’t want to be at St. Joe’s.”

Warren South and Warren West were merged into the St. Joseph Catholic Church for the primary election and Rivett said that it “worked fine.”

Rivett said the local elections official contacted St. John’s Lutheran Church in Pleasant Township to possibly move there and that it was “pretty much out of her (the precinct official) realm of responsibility” to contact the potential host.

Rivett said the only other location on the south side are Warren General Hospital sites and said it would be “irresponsible” to hold an election there mid-pandemic.

Commissioner Jeff Eggleston said the county “tried to look everywhere we can” but “can’t find an alternative.” He said if an alternative made sense it was likely the board would support it. “(We) haven’t been able to find that.”

Rivett said moving the precinct to Pleasant Township would be confusing for Pleasant Township voters and said the Department of State indicated it is “not wise to move it out of the municipality” while Solicitor Nathaniel Schmidt said the move could only be made if there was no other place within the city limits to place the precinct.

The board concurred with Rivett’s recommendation of sending a letter to the Warren South precinct official indicating that the polling place would not be changed at this time.
