Outdoor learning activities set for Saturday at Hearts Content

An event is planned for Saturday at Hearts Content that will provide several wildlife learning opportunities.

The Allegheny Outdoor Club is holding the event that will cover bird-banding, tree identification, old growth forest history as well as elements of GPS technology.

Events start at 9 a.m. and will wrap up between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

The first session will feature Don Watts, a wildlife technician and master bird-bander as well as Research Wildlife Biologist Scott Stoleson.

“While introducing everyone to bird-banding, the very experienced pair will set up mesh nests to hopefully trap a few birds, band them, and release them,” according to a description of the event.

Participants will then be led around the interpretive trail at Hearts Content by Todd Ristau, a research biologist at the Irvine Northern Research Station. He will discuss tree identification as well as the flora and fauna of that old growth area. The hike is expected to step off at about 11 a.m.

The last presenter for the day will be Wes Ramsey, executive director of the Penn Soil Resource Conservation and Development Council who “will discuss the elements of GPS technology and introduce geocaching to those unfamiliar with the outdoor activity.”
