Warren needed big win against Girard, and came back to do it

District 10 was going to have a tough decision to make regarding seeding in the Class AAA tournament either way, Warren just made it a little tougher.

The Dragons edged out Region 6 leader Girard, 33-30, in a hard-fought battle Tuesday at Warren Area High School. With the win, Warren improves to 13-8 overall and 6-3 in the region while Girard falls to 14-7 and 7-2. General McLane had a chance to move into a tie for first, but fell to fourth-place Harbor Creek by a score of 55-34 on Tuesday. Harbor Creek also defeated Warren last week.

It’s been that kind of season.

“The Harbor Creek game put us in a bad spot,” said Dragons’ coach Jeff Berdine. “I thought we needed to go 2-0 in region games this week (to make up for it). Our goal was to get ourselves in a tie for second. That might keep us out of a play-in game, which is huge when you have teams like Meadville, Strong Vincent, and Prep waiting.”

Tuesday’s game was also senior night for the Dragons with Scott Vasilisin, Tanner Stanz, John White, Matt Hultquist, Max Gross, Jacoby Passmore and Sam Lindquist being honored before tip-off.

The Yellow Jackets held a slim lead for much of the game, but it was an 8-0 Warren run spanning the last five minutes of the fourth quarter that would seal the win in an expectedly defensive matchup.

Trailing 30-25, Passmore knocked down a three after a timeout to make it a one-possession game. The Dragons’ trap defense paid off with a steal courtesy of Jason Waterfield on Girard’s next possession, and Evan Suppa scored the tying bucket as well as the go-ahead foul shot on a three-point play to put Warren in front.

“I don’t think there was a bigger play in the game,” said Berdine of the Waterfield steal. “That really got the crowd going and swung the momentum our way.”

Two attempts by the Yellow Jackets to regain the lead were off the mark and rebounded by Devin Nowacki, and Nowacki cashed in a pair of free throws at the other end to secure the victory.

Suppa finished with a game-high 13 points while Nowacki added 10. Suppa also pitched in three steals and Waterfield had four assists.

At the charity stripe, Suppa finished the night 4-of-5 and Nowacki was 4-of-4 with the two combining to go 5-of-5 in the fourth quarter.

Keith Harbaugh led Girard with 12 points in the loss.

With a showdown against General McLane (11-9, 6-3) on tap for Friday, the Dragons have a chance to take sole possession of second place in Region 6 heading into the postseason. Girard wraps up its season Friday at last-place Fort LeBoeuf.

A furious fourth-quarter rally fell short for Warren in the junior varsity game, as the Dragons dropped a 35-33 decision to the Yellow Jackets. Logan Galloway scored 11 points, Dominick Funari added nine and Noah Becker finished with seven.

WCCS 51, J’TOWN BETHEL 49

The Warren County Christian School boys won their third game of the season and their second in a row on Tuesday, 51-49 over Jamestown Bethel.

“It was by far our best game of the season,” said WCCS coach Tom Jones. “All week in practice we talked about three things we needed to do: Press them the whole game, limit their offensive rebounds – they have a really talented kid that goes about 6-5, 6-6 – and the third thing was reduce our turnovers. The boys did all of three of those things. Earlier in the year (Jamestown Bethel) was 20 points ahead of us.”

The Lions trailed by two points at the half before taking the lead on the strength of a 21-point third quarter. Jamestown Bethel cut that advantage to four late in the game, and went to the foul line for three shots with only seconds remaining.

The visitors hit the first two and missed the third intentionally, but WCCS was able to grab the rebound to secure the victory.

Erik Sorensen led a balanced Lions’ scoring attack with 19 points while Tommy Jones, Zack Ballard, and Josiah Poindexter each added nine.

“Poindexter and Ballard were amazing on the boards despite giving up three or four inches to their guy,” added Jones.

The Lions host Erie Bethel on Thursday for parent night at WCCS.

JAMESTOWN BETHEL (49): Hanes 7 4-4 20, Dibble 0 2-5 2, Nixon 3 2-2 8, Zilich 5 5-8 19.
