Warren girls wrestling impresses at Curwensville

CURWENSVILLE — The Warren County girls wrestling team was on the road Saturday as they traveled to Curwensville to compete in their 29-team tournament. The Dragons wrestled hard and competed well to earn a 6th place team finish in the event. Making the podium for Warren was Kaylee Cyphert, 2nd place, Jenna Kophazy, 2nd place, Bryn Lindell, 6th place, Madisyn Flores, 6th place, and Abbie Darr, 3rd place.

Wrestling at 108 pounds, senior Kaylee Cyphert turned in another solid performance as she picked up 3 wins and had just 1 loss. The highlight of the tournament for her was pinning the 6th ranked girl in the state of Pennsylvania in her semi-final matchup. Cyphert fell in the finals, but was a force on the mat all weekend.

At 114, senior Jenny Kophazy earned 4 wins on her weekend, securing a spot in the finals. She dropped a hard-fought 5-3 decision, and had another great tournament.

Bryn Lindell, wrestling at 118 pounds, won 4 matches and lost 2 en route to a 6th place finish. “This was another great outing for Bryn,” reported head coach Glenn Baldensperger. “Her hard work is paying dividends. After getting caught in her first match, she battled back with 4 straight victories.”

Madisyn Flores, the 155-pounder, had a weekend record of 3-2, good for 6th place.

“Maddie put together another nice tournament,” commented Baldensperger. “She puts in the extra time which makes all the difference.”

The final wrestler to make the podium was 190-pounder Abbie Darr, who along with many of her teammates, is having a fantastic season. Darr finished in 3rd place over the weekend, picking up 2 wins and 1 loss.

“Abbie wrestled well, giving up her first loss of the season,” Baldensperger said. “She has been fighting some sickness lately so she was not 100%. She got caught in her semi-finals match by the eventual champion, but bounced back for 3rd place.”

Also competing well for the Dragons were Nakita Nelson and Emily Wiles as they both picked up a win at the event.

“Even in our losses there is no quit in our ladies!” said Baldensperger.

In junior high action, Maci Hodak earned a 3rd place finish, McKenzie Hodak 2nd place, and Skylar Zaffino and Chloe Wiles each took 4th place.

The girls return to the mat on Tuesday when they host the Corry Beavers for their first ever stand-alone home dual meet at Warren Area High School.

Starting at $3.50/week.
