RUSSELL — In a rare Saturday afternoon contest, the Eisenhower girls basketball team improved its record to 3-2 by defeating Fort Leboeuf 53-45 in a non-region game.
Eisenhower jumped out to a 12-7 first-quarter lead as seniors Lainey Font drained a pair of 3-pointers and teammate Clara Steinberg added one.
The second quarter saw Steinberg hit a pair of deep treys and finished with 10 points in the period. Fellow senior Laney Belcher and Font both added 4 points to help the Knights take a 29-15 halftime lead.
After the break, Font put on a shooting clinic with two more 3-pointers and a pair of field goals. She would finish with 22 points to lead all scorers. Riley Robinault and freshman Camdyn Black also added field goals to build a 44-29 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Bisons put up a valiant effort and did close the deficit to eight points as their defensive pressure forced turnovers. Font would not let the visitors back into the game as she nailed a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of field goals to keep Fort Leboeuf at bay. “The girls played good basketball today,” Knights’ head coach DJ Steinberg said. “Laney B really played her heart out on defense. We were able to create a lot of turnovers that resulted in points. Sam, Riley and Clara all had a bunch of steals.”

In addition to Font’s 22 points, Steinberg added 16 points. Fort Leboeuf was led by Maggie Lemock, who tallied 15.
“Clara did agreat job of getting to the rim, drawing in multiple defenders, and Font was able to hit her shots from range,” Coach Steinberg said. “(It was) another well-executed team win.”
Eisenhower is back in action tonight when it travels to Warren for a non-region cross-county clash.
