Warren girls take care of Girard 4-0

GIRARD — The Warren Area High Lady Girls Soccer team traveled to Girard for a Saturday matchup against the Yellow Jackets and left with a shutout victory.

“Last year, Girard beat us 3-1 during the season,” Warren head coach Mark Ordiway stated. “And we pulled a minor upset in the playoffs with a 2-1 win. This game had a playoff vibe to it. It was a very physical matchup.”

Warren’s defense played tough the entire game, which allowed for the offense to develop plays and take advantage of opportunities.

“Through the first five games, our schedule was exactly the same as last season,” Ordiway added. “Last year, we started out 1-4, but now we are 3-2 while conceding 15 less goals. Our defense is much improved. Lilly Stanley is very calm on the ball and always under control. The addition of freshman Grace Wilkins has really helped. Grace is very physical and her speed has cut down a lot of scoring opportunities.”

Leading 3-0 at the half, Warren scored one more in the second without conceding a single goal during the contest for a 4-0 final score.

Senior Leyna Irwin scored two goals on the outing while sister Meea contributed a goal herself as well as two assists. Junior Lani Wenzel buried a goal off an assist from Meea Irwin.

“This game was very aggressive and no one backed down,” Warren’s Leyna Irwin said about the shutout. “We did well on and off the ball. I definitely think we need to work on positioning. Other than that, it’s one game to the next. We keep going.”

The Lady Dragons will try to keep the positive vibes rolling when they travel to Seneca High School on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start time.

Starting at $3.50/week.
