Dragons’ doubles teams fall in District 10 tourney
ERIE — Three Warren pairs traveled to Westwood Racquet Club on Wednesday to compete in the District 10 3A doubles tournament. Warren’s top team made it to the tourney semifinals before being eliminated by McDowell.
The draw was made up of six schools — the four AAA from D10, Dubois from D9 and Allderdice from D8.
Adam Strandburg and Lucas Thrift paired up to make a run to the semifinals. They kicked things off with a 9-7 opening-round win over a team from McDowell and an 8-0 victory over a pair from Erie in the quarterfinals.
In the semis, Strandburg and Thrift took on last year’s defending champs and this year’s top seed, falling 6-10 in a close contest.
“This was a great match and high-level tennis from both pairs,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “All four players have bigger serves and it was all about who could break serve today and, unfortunately for us, McDowell jumped on us early, grabbing 5-2 and 8-3 leads during the match.
“Overall, it was a good showing for the day, but these slow starts have been hurting us,” said Pellegrino. “The boys almost clawed their way back into it today, being only a point away from bringing it to 7-8 and within one game away, but had too much ground to cover. If we started the match how we played the second half, I think we would have seen a different outcome.”
The Warren pair of Jaxon Thrift and Brody Alexander took on the third-seeded team from Allderdice (D8), falling 5-8 in the opening round.
Jack Lynds and Ben Scott won their opening-round match by defeating a pair from Meadville, 8-0, to then be matched up against the top seed and returning champions from McDowell, falling 2-8.
“The boys will now get back to work as they will have their final practice of the season (on Thursday) to prepare for the (team) title match against McDowell on Friday at Westwood,” said Pellegrino.
Warren lost to McDowell, 2-3, during the regular season.
“We know it’s going to be a battle on Friday, but we have a senior-heavy lineup who wants nothing more than to go out on top,” said Pellegrino. “Should be a good matchup and they are excited for the opportunity to compete for a title.”
