Clymer rallies past Knights

CORRY — The Clymer Pirates found themselves down 25-7 early in the second quarter and battled back to tie the game in regulation at 46-46 to send the game into overtime.
The game appeared headed into a second overtime period, but with 1.1 seconds on the clock the Pirates’ Roman Wassink hit a short jump shot that fell through to give the Pirates a 50-48 win over Eisenhower in the opening game of the Corry Christmas Tournament on Friday.
The Pirates started out with the hot shooting hand and jumped out to a 7-2 lead on the Knights before Austin Hanson hit a pair of 3-pointers and teammate Will Mandeville added one as the Knights opened up a 19-7 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Clymer’s Carson White had 6 points in the second quarter as the Pirates began to slowly chip away at the Knights’ lead, outscoring Eisenhower 11-10 in the quarter, but they still found themselves down 11 at the break.
With the Knights’ leading scorer, Austin Hanson, on the bench with an injury for the entire second half, Eisenhower senior Casey Seymour added a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 10 points in the third quarter. The Knights kept the lead at 10 points, 42-32, heading into the final quarter.
The Pirates’ defense held the Knights to just 4 points in the final quarter and White scored 11 of Clymer’s 14 points in the quarter. The Knights had their chances to get the lead back but made only one of six free throws in the waning minutes of the quarter. Eisenhower’s Gavin Lindemuth sank one of two free throws to tie the game at 46-46 with 26 seconds left in regulation. The Pirates worked the clock for the final shot, but it banked off the rim and out to send the game into overtime.
Both teams were cautious with the ball but it was Wassink who got a rebound and put up his shot for the Pirates victory.
Clymer will play in the championship game tonight versus the winner of the Corry/Northwestern game. The Knights will play in the consolation game against the loser of that game.
