Sheffield travels to Smethport

Sheffield looks for its second win of the season today at Smethport in its second of three straight road games.

Sheffield coach Mike Barr said the Wolverines will be looking back to their season opener when they broke a near five-year losing streak with a 38-6 win over Bucktail.

“We are looking to be balanced again,” said Barr, whose Wolverines fell to 1-1 with a 42-6 loss at Otto Eldred/Oswayo Valley a week ago. “We want to get the confidence back that we had week one. Practice was good this week as the kids were focused.”

Winning felt pretty good when it hadn’t happened at Sheffield for anyone on the current roster. Colby Barr was a freshman quarterback the last time Sheffield played Smethport in 2021, losing 49-6. But the Hubbers are 3-17 over the past three seasons, including starting 0-2 this year. After a 48-12 loss to Lucas (Ohio) in week one, Smethport lost 73-6 vs. visiting Port Allegany a week ago. The Hubbers had 64 yards of offense and gave up close to 500 to the Gators (2-0).

After three straight winless seasons before breaking a 27-game losing streak, Barr’s Wolverines aren’t about to take anyone lightly.

“(They) have a good mix of pass and run,” he said. “(They) seem to be in the same boat as most (with roster) numbers in the low 20s. It should be a good game.”

Starting at $3.50/week.
