Sheffield falls in 5 sets to Ridgway
RIDGWAY — Sheffield’s volleyball team lost a five-set battle — 25-23, 13-25, 26-24, 21-25, 15-17 — on Thursday at Ridgway.
“We are struggling with playing inconsistent volleyball, which comes with some inexperience, but we are starting to identify players in roles that will help make us the most successful,” said Sheffield coach Melissa Lemay, whose Wolverines are 2-5 overall. “I have moved freshman Lily Richards into the varsity setter position and she is starting to come into her own. She has good hands and is learning how to move the ball around well. Senior Madison Hackley played very well tonight, leading us in kills and serving. Poor hitting percentages continue to plague us. We are in system a lot of the time, but we can’t seem to find the floor. We have to figure out a way to turn the tables on that, so we have more kills than hitting errors. We are beating ourselves with mental mistakes. Ridgway likes to push the ball over on two a lot, leading to a team total of 99 digs. Madison Connolly and Emily Davidson accounted for 64 of those digs. We just need to figure out how to convert these digs into a more potent offense.”
Davidson had 40 digs; Richards 19 assists; Hackley nine kills and was 16 of 16 from the service line; Katie Finch six kills and five blocks; and Lily Benton 12 digs and seven aces.
