Eisenhower, Cochranton feature talented QBs
RUSSELL — The Eisenhower Knights (2-2) welcome the Cochranton Cardinals in a nonregion game tonight for homecoming.
Both teams are looking to get back into the win column.
Eisenhower lost last week at Northwestern 32-14 in a game that was closer than the score indicated as the Knights gave up an 80-yard touchdown reception, allowed an interception to be returned for a touchdown, and were inside the 10-yard line and came away with no points.
Cochranton lost last week as well as the Cardinals were humbled by Greenville 62-0.
The Knights are led by junior quarterback Caleb Jakubczak, who has thrown for 215 yards and rushed for 338 yards. Junior tailback Logan Penley has also had an impact with 255 yards rushing.
Eisenhower is hoping to establish its passing game as the Knights have traditionally been a balanced offensive team. In order for that to happen the Knights must be able to stop the Cardinals defensive front. Cochranton has a big line, averaging 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds. Eisenhower head coach Jim Penley knows that the key to the game lies with his line.
“Their line gets off the ball extremely well and gets into the blocks quickly,” he said. “On defense, they are quick, aggressive and are talented tacklers. Our line will have to control the line of scrimmage.”
Cochranton brings a talented quarterback into the game with 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior Walker Carroll.
“Their quarterback is an outstanding athlete who gets the ball out quickly to his wide receivers and running backs out of the backfield,” Penley said. “We have to be ready to defend his skill set.”
In what should be an opportunity to watch two of the top young quarterbacks in the area, kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
