3 Dragons qualify for D10 golf tourney
EDINBORO — Warren again finished third at the final Region 6 Boys Golf Mega Match of the regular season Monday, but the Dragons were only five strokes out of first and four out of second at Culbertson Hills Golf Club.
Warren senior Conner Zaffino tied for second out of 25 with an 18-hole 79 and senior teammate Reid Olsen tied for 14th with an 85. Both solidified their spots among the top 15 individuals in the region for the District 10 3A Championship beginning Oct. 1 in Meadville. Zaffino finished fourth in D10 3A with an 80.25 average. Olsen was eighth with an 83.25.
The highlight of Monday’s final region match, however, may have been Collin Ellis’ sixth-place finish.
“(He) moved up four spots by shooting 82 to qualify (for the D10 tournament),” said Warren coach Nate Sandberg.
With his best round of the season, Ellis finished 13th by season average.
Also on Monday, Gavin Haibach shot his best round of the season with an 84, just missing out on automatically qualifying with a 17th-place 89.25 average.
Carter Cochran shot an 86.
McDowell’s Ethan Bock was medalist at 77, and the season leader, Meadville’s Luke Ferry, was in a four-way tie for second at 79. Region-champion Meadville won again as a team with 325, McDowell finished with 326, Warren 330, General McLane 341 and Erie High 373 — exactly how the season standings went.
