The Warren High Unified track and field team earned their first win of the season on Thursday as they defeated the Corry Beavers by a score of 134-95. The Fairview Tigers also competed in the meet and were the overall winners with a score of 167.
First place finishers for the Dragons in their respective classes were: Peyton Horner and Noel Ireland in the 100-meter dash, Peyton Horner, Noel Ireland, and Isaac Zapel in the shot put, and Ryder Check in the turbo javelin. The Dragons also had 11 second-place finishes, and four third-place finishes in their divisions.
“We faced Corry on Monday and set the goal to surpass them on Thursday,” reported head coach Cayla Onoratti. “In order to do so, every team member had to contribute, and they did just that. We showed up with the minimum team number permitted and all 12 placed in either their running event, field event, or, for the majority, both. Both 4×100 relays also contributed, both finishing in second. This resulted in our first team win over Corry, which is a fantastic accomplishment. It was a cold, rainy day. Our team could have easily put forth effort to match the weather, but they did the exact opposite. As a coaching staff, we are so incredibly proud of these kids. We are excited to go on to the Regional Championship meet next week with our first team win under our belt.”
The Dragons keep improving as they prepare for the Regional Championship next Friday at General McLane.
“Regions presents a unique opportunity to race against teams we have yet to face, including a couple schools from Pittsburgh,” Onoratti added. “I cannot wait to see how our kids take this win and apply that same effort next week.”
The following teams will be represented at Regionals: Warren, Taylor Allderdice, Conroy/CAPA, Corry, General McLane, McDowell and Northwestern.
