Tarp Skunks in playoff spot with three games remaining

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — A modest two-game winning streak has the Jamestown Tarp Skunks comfortably in a playoff spot with three games remaining in their season.

Jamestown’s latest win came Thursday when a three-run top of the ninth inning gave the Tarp Skunks a 4-1 Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League victory over the Niagara Falls Americans at Sal Maglie Stadium.

Thursday’s victory came less than 24 hours after a 2-1 win over the Geneva Red Wings at McDonough Park.

Jamestown sits at 19-22 in the West Division, three games ahead of fifth-place Niagara Falls. The top four teams qualify for next week’s playoffs. The Tarp Skunks will host the first-place Batavia Muckdogs at 6:30 p.m. today at Diethrick Park in their last home game of the season. On Saturday, Jamestown visits Dwyer Stadium to take on the Muckdogs at 6:35 p.m. before traveling to Elmira to take on the Pioneers at Dunn Field at 4:05 p.m. Sunday.

On Thursday, the Tarp Skunks received a masterful pitching performance from Hayden Givens-Craig (University of Tampa) and Griffin White (Wagner College). Givens-Craig threw the first five innings, allowing one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out three before White threw the final four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight.

Niagara Falls led 1-0 after two innings before Jamestown tied the game in the fifth. Kobe Jones (Shorter University) singled and Zachary Kourous (Mercyhurst University) both singled before moving up on a groundout by Aidan Wallace (University of Tampa). With one out, Leo Doyle (Wagner College) grounded out to first base to plate Jones.

The score remained 1-1 into the top of the ninth inning. Austin Matranga (Grand Canyon University) led off with a walk, went to second on a Henry Juan (Williams College) groundout and moved to third on a Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) single. Jones, Kourous and Wallace followed with consecutive RBI singles to make it 4-1.

White struck out the first two batters in the bottom of the ninth before hitting a batter. He then induced a flyout to center field to end the game.

On Wednesday, Gage Hayes (Drury University) lowered his earned run average to 1.93 with six innings of shutout ball while striking out five. Gabe Wheeler (University of Tampa) allowed a run, but got the final nine outs with three strikeouts.

Jamestown took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Nigel Sebastianelli (Niagara County Community College) walked with two outs, stole a base, and scored on Matranga’s RBI triple.

After Geneva tied the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Tarp Skunks regained the lead with an eighth-inning run. Doyle led off with a single, stole second and scored on a Noah Brooks (Siena College) RBI double.

Wheeler retired the final six Red Wings in order to lock down the win.

Matranga had two hits, including his triple, and Doyle had two hits, including a double.
