Skunks fall to Newark in 10
NEWARK, N.Y. — Grant Russo, Newark’s automatic base runner, scored on Sam Miller’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Pilots beat the Jamestown Tarp Skunks 5-4 in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action at Colburn Park on Thursday night.
The teams were tied 1-1 after three innings before Newark took a 4-1 lead over the next two innings.
Then, in the top of the ninth inning, Jamestown rallied for three runs to force an extra inning. In the ninth, Henry Juan (Williams College) led off with a double and went to third base when Bobby Stang (University of Dayton) reached on an error. Kobe Jones (Shorter University) made it 4-2 with an RBI double before DJ Stoianovich (SUNY Brockport) tied the game with a two-run single. Still with no outs, the next three Tarp Skunks were retired in order.
After holding the Pilots scoreless in the bottom of the ninth, Jamestown squandered its free runner in the top of the 10th inning with a grounder to the pitcher, a strikeout and a fly ball to center field.
Sixth-place Newark took advantage in the bottom of the frame to pick up its 13th win of the season while fourth-place Jamestown fell to 16-19 in the West Division.
Sam Hough (Bates College) started for the Tarp Skunks, allowing three runs on nine hits and three walks while striking out one in 4 1/3 innings. Shaniel Maldonado (Mercer Community College) gave up a run on two hits and a walk while striking out two in 1 2/3 innings of relief. Hayden Givens-Craig (University of Tampa) took the loss, allowing just one run on a hit and no walks while striking out four in three innings.
Jamestown’s first run came in the fourth inning when Connor Kiefer (Alfred State College) walked and eventually scored on an RBI double from Juan.
Juan finished with two hits, while the Tarp Skunks’ other five hits came from Austin Matranga (Grand Canyon University), Stang, Jones, Stoianovich and Kiefer each had one.
Jamestown will visit Niagara Falls to take on the Americans at 6:35 p.m. today inside Sal Maglie Stadium before returning home Saturday to take on Geneva at 6:30 p.m. at Diethrick Park.
