PUNXSUTAWNEY — Warren’s Boys Minors all-star team was eliminated on Wednesday by Punxsutawney 14-0 to finish 4-2 in the Little League 8-10-year-old District 10 tournament.
Punxsutawney no-hit Warren to advance to the tourney finals to take on unbeaten Bradford (3-0). Bradford beat Punxsy, 5-2, on Monday to advance to the finals, which begin at 6 p.m. tonight in Bradford. Punxsy (4-1) has to defeat Bradford twice for the championship of the double-elimination tournament. The champion advances to the Little League Section 1 tournament.
Warren tried to make things difficult for the losers-bracket finalist on Wednesday. In the top of the first inning, Warren catcher Ackron Hoisington threw out two base runners attempting to steal.
In the bottom of the first, Evan Wilcox led off with a well-hit ball in the right-center-field gap only to be tracked down and snagged by the Punxsy centerfielder.
In the second inning, Warren’s Max Papalia and Cam Briggs each walked, but were left stranded.
In the third, Hoisington threw out another potential base stealer, and he picked off a runner at first in the fourth inning.
When Warren did hit the ball, it was right at a solid Punxsy defense.
In six games, Warren outscored opponents 44-37 with 25 of those 37 runs coming in losses against the tourney finalists, Bradford and Punxsutawney.
Overall for Warren, Jansen Walters was 9-for-13 with a team-leading eight runs scored, and Hoisington led with eight RBI.
“We battled back in both games against DuBois from down by four in each game,” said Warren head coach Adam Hoisington. “Wilcox was solid on the mound throughout the tournament. The defense was spectacular for the most part with clutch plays from Walters at second base, timely catches from Glade Rulander in centerfield, and (Ackron) Hoisington had seven putouts from catcher.”
All four teams from WCYBSA — Warren minors and majors baseball and minors and majors softball — have been eliminated from Little League all-star tournament play.
