Tarp Skunks drop sixth straight game
NEWARK, N.Y. — The Jamestown Tarp Skunks led 3-0 after the top of the third inning, but gave up nine runs to the Newark Pilots in their next four half-innings en route to a 9-5 loss in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League action Sunday evening at Colburn Park.
The Tarp Skunks’ sixth straight loss dropped them to 4-7 on the season, six games back of the first-place Batavia Muckdogs. The Pilots improved to 4-9.
Jamestown’s Nigel Sebastianelli (Niagara County Community College) walked and eventually scored on a DJ Stoianovich (Mansfield University) sacrifice fly in the first inning.
In the second, Connor Kiefer (Alfred State College) was hit by a pitch with two outs and went to second on a wild pitch before later scoring on a bases-loaded walk to Aidan Wallace (University of Tampa).
The Tarp Skunks’ lead grew to 3-0 in the top of the third inning when Tommy Schroeder (Shorter University) walked with two outs, went to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Julian Sauger’s (Shorter University) RBI double.
Newark got a pair of runs back in the bottom of the third inning, chasing Jamestown starter Eli Shedd (Wagner College), who struck out three while allowing two runs on four hits and a walk.
The Tarp Skunks tacked on two more runs in the top of the fourth inning to take a 5-2 lead. Eli Harpalani (Catawba Valley Community College) and Sebastianelli walked with one out before Kobe Jones (Shorter University) hit a two-run double with two outs.
After pitching a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning, Jamestown reliever Austin Kalsek (Grand Canyon University) got roughed up for seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and three walks while striking out three over the next two innings.
Simon Aluko (Shorter University) got the final six outs for the Tarp Skunks on five strikeouts. He did not allow a hit and walked two.
Jamestown had runners at first and second with two outs in the fifth; the bases loaded with two outs in the seventh; and a leadoff runner on base in the eight, but could not push any more runs across.
The Tarp Skunks will travel to Niagara Falls on Tuesday to take on the Americans at Sal Maglie Stadium before returning home for a 6:30 p.m. first pitch Wednesday against the Elmira Pioneers at Diethrick Park.
