Youngsville improves to 2-0

ERIE — Youngsville’s baseball team can win in a lot of ways.

One day after scoring just three runs on two hits in a win over Cochranton, the Eagles scored 13 runs and collected 12 hits in a 13-9 victory over the Iroquois Braves on Thursday at Mercyhurst University.

“We had some trouble making the routine plays tonight and gave up too many free bases and Iroquois capitalized,” said Youngsville coach Eddie Dorunda. “All in all it wasn’t a great game, but we found a way to win. Good teams battle until the end and that’s what we did.”

The Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead through the first two-and-a-half innings before Iroquois exploded for six runs over the third and fourth innings to take a 6-3 lead to the fifth. There, the Eagles were able to finally break through with some key hits and take back control of the game.

Cole Johnson got the scoring started in the fifth for the Eagles with an RBI single that plated Nathan Lucks and got Youngsville within two runs. Not long after, Johnson scored on a passed ball and the Eagles were in business.

Before the inning was over, the Eagles would plate seven runs and build a 10-6 lead on the strength of RBI singles from Matt DeSimone and Ethan Beers, a two-run single from Lucks and another run that scored on an error.

“There in the fifth inning we had some timely hits and made some things happen,” added Dorunda.

Iroquois refused to go quietly, pushing three runs across the plate in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 10-9 game.

Needing some insurance in the top of the seventh, the Eagles plated three runs and provided themselves the margin needed for victory.

DeSimone scored a run when a ball hit by James Johnson was misplayed for an error. Lucks delivered a sacrifice fly to score Beers and make it 12-9 and Wyatt Dalrymple’s RBI single scored James Johnson and closed the scoring at 13-9.

The relief pitcher Dalrymple closed the door in the seventh and Youngsville returned home with its second win in as many days.

DeSimone and Lucks each had three-hit games for the Eagles with David Manning adding two hits and Beers, Cole Johnson, Dalrymple and Talon Mesel adding one apiece. Lucks drove in a team-high four runs with DeSimone adding three of his own.

Johnson got the win on the mound, allowing six runs on five hits over four innings. Dalrymple got the save after pitching with the lead over the final three innings.

The first week of the season ends with Youngsville 2-0 with both wins coming in Region 3. The team is now off until Wednesday when it hosts Eisenhower for its third straight Region 3 contest to begin the season.
