Dragons start hot in cold tennis opener

Warren’s boys tennis team kicked off the spring season Friday with a 5-0 win over Harbor Creek at Betts Park.

“The initial plan was to move this indoors if the weather was bad, but due to lack of court availability we decided to keep it outside at Betts,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “The temp was around 38, not much wind, and the snow wasn’t coming until 7 p.m., so both coaches and ADs agreed to play.”

Senior captain Abe Wolf led the charge at first singles, defeating Owen Drabic 6-1, 6-3.

At second singles, junior team captain Adam Strandburg defeated Lexa Maloney 6-1, 6-1.

At third singles, Carson Moore defeated Gavin Wieczoric 6-0, 7-5.

“All three of our singles looked sharp today and played some aggressive tennis getting to the net and putting the ball away,” said Pellegrino.

In first doubles, the pair of Jack Lynds and Lucas Thrift defeated Jack Drahusak and Abbigail Michali 6-2, 6-1.

Warren’s second doubles pair of Tobiah Reinard and Brody Alexander defeated Chloe Knepper and Lauren Wilke 6-0, 6-0.

“With how cold it was, the balls were not very lively today, so our boys did a good job of playing smart, high-percentage tennis and taking care of business at the net,” said Pellegrino.

Grabbing wins in junior varsity play were the pairs of Collin Ellis and Elliott Striker, Josh Westover and Owen Baldensberger, Grady Corey and Bill Bennett, and Finn Ordiway and Jack Napolitan.

The Dragons hit the road Monday for a scrimmage against Olean.

“Olean is one of the best teams in their section and has a very talented squad,” said Pellegrino. “We are excited for the challenge and think it will only benefit us for our regular-season matches.”
