Warren boys tennis sweeps doubleheader

ST. MARYS — After a big Region 5 win over Hickory on Thursday, Warren’s boys tennis team kept rolling on Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Elk County Catholic at Benzinger Park.

“This was a fun way to end the week after some intense district matchups early in the week,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “We got rained out Wednesday, so we decided to just get both matches done in one day.”

The first matchup was played by the District 9 format, which is 4/3 (four singles and three doubles) followed by a match with the District 10 format, which is 3/2 (three singles and two doubles).

In a 6-1 win in the D9 format, Warren’s Adam Strandburg won 6-0, 6-0 at first singles, Carson Moore won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2, Jack Lynds won 5-7, 6-1, 10-7 at No. 3, and Tobiah Reinard won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4.

In first doubles, Strandburg and Ben Scott defeated their opponents, 8-1. At second doubles, Brody Alexander and Elliot Striker lost, 4-8. At third doubles, Collin Ellis and Owen Baldensperger defeated their opponents, 8-4.

In a 5-0 team sweep of ECC in the D10 format, Strandburg won 6-2, 6-0, Moore won 6-2, 6-1, and Alexander won 6-1, 6-1.

At first doubles, Lynds and Scott defeated their opponents, 6-1, 6-3, and Grady Corey and Josh Westover won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 doubles.

“We managed to get every player some varsity playing time today across both matches, which is always great and provided for a fun day of tennis,” said Pellegrino. “The highlight of the day came in match number two when the pair of Grady Corey and Josh Westover defeated their opponents in an epic showdown at second doubles, 6-4, 7-5. This was this pair’s first varsity win on the season. Josh took over the net, smashing big overhead after big overhead while Grady had some impressive play from the baseline setting his partner up at the net.”

Warren is 10-2 on the season and has three postponed matches left to make up over the course of the next couple of weeks.

“We will also be heading to Buhl Park next Wednesday for the annual Tri-County team Tournament,” said Pellegrino.
