MERCER — Central Clarion (168.5) took the top spot at the Mercer VFW Tournament followed by Fort Cherry (156.0), Laurel (151.5), Cambridge Springs (128.5), Slippery Rock (123.5), and in sixth place Sheffield (110.5).
Trenton Mead (189) and Hayden Holden (127) both took second place for the Wolverines, while Chase Kyler (133) came in third place, and Carter Campbell (139) and Alex Marfink (145) both took fourth place.
Mitchell Brinsky (Bradford) fell via pinfall to Hayden Holden in 2:35 in Championship Round One. Holden kept rolling into the championship quarterfinals, with a major decision over Grayson Aaron (Central Clarion), 11-2. Holden pinned Drake Taylor (West Branch) in 2:33 in the championship semifinals, then lost in a close decision to Carter Wise (Mercer), 7-5 in the championship finals.
In the championship quarterfinals Trenton Mead was able to top Jacob Naser (Central Clarion). Mead was able to pin the sophomore in 1:53. In the championship semifinals, Mead won narrowly over Kolton Carlson (Laurel) 9-6. Mead’s only loss came in the championship finals, where Anthony Salvini (Fort Cherry) won by injury default at 5:18.
“I had the goal of making the finals,” said Mead. “I was happy to reach that goal and also see my teammates all do so well.”
Sheffield’s Chase Kyler kicked off his night with a technical fall victory over Nick Martin (Bradford), 26-11. In the championship quarterfinals, Kyler was pinned at 1:59 by Colton Frazier (North Star) who would go on to take second place. Kyler regrouped and was able to pin his next three opponents, Teagan McKain (West Shamokin), Seth Weckerly (Central Clarion), and Austin Mruk (Chartiers-Houston), to battle out of consultation, to go on to win by major decision over A.J. Scalise (Seneca) 14-4.
“I was relatively happy with how I wrestled,” said Kyler, whose initial goal was to face off in the finals against Central Clarion’s Logan Powell. “I was upset after the first day, but I realized that first place wasn’t obtainable anymore and took on a next-up mentality and just wanted to make the best of what I was dealt. So, I locked in on the second day and won some tough matches to get third. Even though I didn’t meet my goal, I can’t be too upset with how things turned out.”
Alex Marfink pinned his first opponent in the championship quarterfinals Nathan Hill (Laurel) in 1:18. Marfink was pinned in the championship semifinals by Hunter Schnarrs (West Branch), who would take second place. Marfink pinned Chas Rush (Fort Cherry) to go on to battle for third, but fell short to Owen Deutschlander (Coudersport) 18-15.
Tyler Glaister (Mercer) lost by decision to Carter Campbell 10-4 in championship round one, however Campbell lost a close match to Brandon Hoover (Cambridge Springs), 7-4, in the Championship Quarterfinals. Like Kyler, Campbell was able to pin his way out of consolation, with wins over Kenneth Shellhouse (Youngsville), E.J. Powers (West Shamokin), and Brendon Wright (Central Clarion) to set up a rematch with Hoover for third place. Campbell was not able to finish the story, though, getting pinned by Hoover in 2:04.
The Wolverines will host Port Allegany on Tuesday.
