Junior high wrestling
The Youngsville Junior High Eagles hosted Beaty Warren Wednesday night. Both squads came into the contest missing team members, but it was Youngsville who prevailed by a score of 21-3.
At 108lbs, Ayden Dean squared off with Parker Kiser. Kiser was able to capitalize on a Dean shot to take an early 2-0 lead. After a scoreless second period, Dean chose neutral to start the third and picked up the pace. Dean fired off another shot, this time getting in better position to finish. Kiser was able to outmaneuver Dean, however, and secure a takedown of his own to ice the match for the 4-0 win.
At 122lbs, Brayden Patch and Walter Trowbridge met in a rematch from the Paul Clough Tournament. Patch and Trowbridge battled each other hard through two periods. In the third period, Patch was able to put Trowbridge to his back and collect the fall at 3:32 to put the Eagles on the board.
Next up for the Eagles at 130lbs was Tucker Sanford. Sanford matched up with Justin Krall. Krall took an early 2-0 lead on the strength of a double leg takedown. After several mat returns by Krall over the course of the first and half way through the second period, Sanford was able to score an escape and immediately went on the offensive. The approach worked as Sanford converted on a takedown. Then, Sanford took advantage of starting from the top position at the beginning of the third period and ran an armbar which put Krall to his back. Sanford earned the fall in 3:48 to put the Eagles ahead 12-3.
Following Sanford, at 138lbs, was Mason Fleming. Fleming had a match with a familiar foe in Kobe Zaffino. Right from the first whistle, Fleming took ground and scored on a double leg takedown. Fleming continued to look for opportunities to turn Zaffino, but encountered much difficulty. Fleming was able to work in a half nelson and finally turn Zaffino to his back, but Zaffino once again proved tough to pin down as he was nearly able to reverse Fleming to his back. When the dust settled, it was Fleming who emerged the victor by a score of 9-5 to put the Eagles further in the lead 15-3.
In the last contested match of the night, Brenton Myers bumped up to 170lbs to take on Dehklund Conklin. Myers was able to use a snap down off a Conklin shot to take an early 2-0 lead. Conklin quickly scored an escape to cut Myers lead to 2-1. Conklin was able to escape again in the second period to knot the score at 2-2. Myers scored another takedown in the third period and then converted a half nelson into a win by fall with 0:13 left in the match. Myers win gave the Eagles a 21-3 win.
In extra match action, Tucker Sanford earned another win by fall, this time pinning Shawn Lang in 1:06 and Parker Kiser won an 8-1 decision over Jacob Battko.
“Going into the match, I knew we’d be without Ryker and Collin. I was hoping our healthy guys would be able to step up and help to fill the void” said Coach Tim Suydan “Brenton is someone who stepped up and gave up some serious weight in his match. He wrestled hard and earned his third pin of the season. I thought Mason and Kobe had the match of the night. They just kept coming at each other until the final whistle. Tucker and Brayden looked to me like they took another step in the right direction in their wins. Jake and Ayden wrestled hard too despite losing.”
The Eagles will be competing in the Battle on the Bay Tournament this Sunday at the Bayfront Convention Center.
