CORRY — Eisenhower saw its seven-game winning streak come to an end Friday night as the Knights fell to Corry 74-66 in the championship game of the Jim Gruca Memorial Christmas Tournament.

Eisenhower jumped out a quick 6-0 lead as Casey Seymour had three steals and made the layups. Seymour would go on to score 11 points in the opening quarter to give the Knights the lead 15-13.

The second quarter was all Corry as the Beavers came out pressing and had a hot shooting hand as they connected on six 3-pointers, led by Rylan Smith who hit three in a row to start the period. The Knights’ Kris Bunk had 10 points in the second quarter to keep the Knights within reach of Corry, but the Beavers outscored the knights 25-12 in the second quarter to close the first half with a 28-27 lead.

Bunk and Kyler Black were aggressive on the boards for Eisenhower after the break, creating opportunities for putbacks as they combined for 10 points as the Knights cut the lead to 48-43 at the end of the third quarter.

Eisenhower’s Austin Hanson was a perfect 4 for 4 from the foul line to cut the Corry lead to 59-58 with 1:30 remaining in regulation. The Knights were patient and got a steal of an errant Corry pass, and Hanson found Bunk underneath the hoop for an easy basket to give the Knights the lead 60-59 at the 42-second mark.

Corry’s Smith connected on a short jumper, was fouled on the shot, connected on the free throw to give the lead back to the Beavers 62-60.

Corry quickly called a timeout. The Knights didn’t panic. With 10 seconds remaining, Hanson took the inbounds pass and connected on a perfect pass to Black under the hoop. Black scored with two seconds remaining to send the game into overtime.

Corry’s Kamdyn Moon hit two 3-pointers in the extra session and the Beavers held on for the victory.

I’m really proud of the guys tonight,” Eisenhower coach Ryan Mangini said. “There is no quit in this team. Kyler Black really stepped up for us in the fourth quarter. I’m not happy with the loss, but I saw a lot of good things with this team.”

The Beavers’ Markus Lambert finished with 27 points to lead all scorers while Smith and Kamdyn Moon chipped in 21 and 18 respectively.

Seymour paced Eisenhower with 20 points, Black had 18, Bunk added 12 and Austin Hanson chipped in 11.

In the junior varsity championship game, the Knights fell to Corry 63-31.

Kyler Black was named to the all-tournament team.
