TITUSVILLE — Warren’s girls cross country team finished second — advancing to states — at Saturday’s District 10 2A Cross Country Championships, and Sam Lindell will join them in Hershey with his top 10 finish in the boys’ race at districts.
“We had an awesome showing from our teams,” said Warren coach Kevin Dustin. “Girls were second overall and qualify for the state meet as a team. This is a huge accomplishment that they worked really hard for. They started the season ranked sixth and worked their way to the number two team today. We are extremely proud of this girls group.”
The top two teams at districts qualify for the PIAA 2A meet on Saturday, Nov. 4, in Hershey. Cathedral Prep dominated this win the D10 girls title on Saturday with 35 points, but Warren was second with 125 ahead of Oil City (142), General McLane (176), Hickory (177), Meadville (205), and Corry (206) in the 15-team field.
Senior Hannah Pearson paced the Lady Dragons with a blistering 19:59 in the 3.1-mile race, finishing seventh individually with a medal out of 108 runners.
Sophomore teammate Morgan Alexander was 18th in 20:24, junior Cassidy Britton 25th in 20:47, freshman Emma Peterson 36th in 21:26, and freshman Leona Hovan 42nd in 21:42 to finish to team scoring. Other Lady Dragons were sophomore Jahzara Hunter (66th, 22:49); and sophomore Riley Evan (83rd, 23:43).
“The boys team also ran incredibly well,” said Dustin. “Sam qualified for states as an individual. The rest of the boys ran huge PR’s for themselves and the boys team finished sixth overall (out of 18) when they were ranked 12th at the start of the year.
“To see these teams battle and work from where they began to where they ended is amazing to watch,” added Dustin. “What a great group of kids and we are excited to extend the season one more week at states.”
Lindell’s trip to Hershey will be his third straight as a junior. He was ninth individually out of 123 finishers on Saturday in 16:35.
“This season was tougher because of the districts’ course being really muddy,” said Lindell, “but I did accomplish everything I wanted to do by getting top 10. The goal for states is to go under 17 minutes on the course and get top 25 to medal.”
Other Dragons included junior Cam Williams (29th, 17:28); junior Michael Bojaczko (37th, 17:55); sophomore Emre Morgan (40th, 17:58); freshman Gavin Heeter (89th, 19:14); senior Christopher Joblon (102nd, 19:52); and sophomore Cole English (106th, 19:59).
