To the victors go the spoils for the Lady Dragons with the Region 4 champions receiving all-star honors in 14 track and field events this week — including 10 first-team all-stars.
Warren’s Lilly Newton, who advanced to states in the 400 meters, was named Region 4 Athlete of the Year. The freshman was voted, by Region 4 coaches, a first-team region all-star in the 200, 400, high jump, and as part of the 400 relay with teammates Laney Gatto (junior), Gracie Gatto (senior), and Lindsay Madigan (sophomore). Newton was named a second-team all-star in the 1,600 relay with Gracie Gatto, and juniors Tori McMichael and Alexia Bowers.
“Being named region athlete of the year is something I was definitely not expecting,” said Newton. “Being a freshman, I wasn’t even very aware it was a thing, but I’m honored and I’d love to make it happen again next year.”
Warren first-team all-stars also included Madigan in the 100 and triple jump; senior Shyann Rulander in the 1,600 and 3,200; Laney Gatto in pole vault; and freshman Jenna Kophazy in javelin.
Eisenhower senior Mackenzie Dunn was also a first-team all-star in multiple events — discus and shot put.
