Warren baseball suffers tough loss

General McLane came from behind to top Warren 9-8 on Tuesday at Legion Field.

“We’ve had quite a few tough losses this year, (but) this one really hurts,” said Warren coach Andrew Morrison, whose Dragons are 4-10 overall and 2-9 in Region 5. “The kids played their hearts out. I’m hurting for them tonight.”

The Dragons committed four errors on defense, contributing to the late-inning loss. General McLane scored four runs in the sixth and the tying and go-ahead runs in the seventh.

“The game ended on a ground ball to short,” said Morrison. “Ben Sowa did exactly what we have told him to do and slid at the back of the bag. The ump didn’t see it that way and called the batter out, too, because of interference. It’s tough to have another game end like that, but it’s not the reason we lost.”

Offensively, Warren had nine hits, walked eight times, and reached twice by hit batters. Konnor Hoffman was 2 for 4 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI, and Anthony Errett 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI. Gio Elinsky singled, walked, scored a run and had two RBIs. CJ Wyman contributed a hit, a walk, two runs and an RBI.

“General McLane is a good offensive team but, obviously, the four errors are the killer,” said Morrison. “We had a lot of guys playing out of their primary positions with Konnor pitching and ‘Dip’ (Eric Dippold) getting hurt in the first inning. That’s not easy to do, especially with the lack of practice time we have had recently. CJ Wyman, in particular, did a great job at first base and saved us a few runs. I’m proud of him. He didn’t see a lot of time the first half of the year, but he stuck with it and took advantage of his chances.”

General McLane (6-6 overall and 4-6 in Region 5) finished with 11 hits and struck out just four times. Warren struck out only once all game to its eight walks.

“We’ve played every team we lost to the first time through, tougher the second time,” added Morrison. “We are making progress, but it’s a results game, not a progress game. We are just not making two or three plays a game that would make the difference. This is a good group of kids that I really enjoy being around. I’m looking forward to the last few games with them here.”
