NORTH EAST — Sheffield’s top varsity track athletes spent Saturday competing at the North East Invitational, where the Wolverines were able to walk away with several medals.

Among others, Sheffield brought home three third-place medals and two fourth. The 12-team invitational appeared to be prime competition and an exciting atmosphere for Wolverines’ head coach Jason Snell.

“It was the most perfect conditions weather-wise and such a gorgeous day for an invitational,” said Snell. “We came with the goals of many personal bests, many medals awarded, have a blast together as the season end nears, and district qualifications. We were able to accomplish all of them.”

Wolverine freshman Emma Roell placed third and qualified for Districts (101-8), crushing the qualifying distance of 92-0. Roell was the first leg of the 3,200-meter relay team that placed third (13:20.93) and the last leg of the 400-meter relay team that placed fifth (58.52). Roell also made the finals in the 100 meters.

“She was all over the place running from one event to the other,” said Snell. “For her to put on the performance she did was amazing. It was like an Olympic event of her own, just trying to get to all of her different events. Absolutely outstanding performance by a freshman.”

Roell’s accompanying members of the 3,200-meter relay were Kayle Bell, Emily Davidson and Madison Connolly. For the 400-meter relay, Lily Benton, Kadence Steffan, and Emily Foster rounded out the team. Davidson also placed eighth in javelin (87-11) Foster tied for third in high jump (4-7).

Both boys relay teams placed fourth, with the 400-meter relay (48.7) consisting of Colby Barr, Collin Brown, Jack Chapman and Lucas McNeal, and the 3,200-meter relay (9:40.49) made up of Emre Morgan, Alex Eaton, Marc Lewis and Dylan Hardwick. Brown, in the 200 meters (25.19) and Hardwick in the 800 meters (2:12.92) both placed sixth. Also coming in sixth was Connor Finch in the triple jump (35-11.5). In addition to the relay, Eaton placed seventh in the 3,200 meters (11:47.11). Lucas McNeal earned the seventh spot in the high jump (5-3) to top off the boys.

The Wolverine hurdlers didn’t bring home any medals, but Lily Benton, Sarah Hoffman, Alex Marfink, Gage Mott-Macalush and Mason Silvis all made the finals, giving Snell a lot of reasons to be happy with their performance.

“None of them earned a medal, but what an awesome accomplishment to make the finals with the top-tier talent this invitational features,” said Snell. “Coach Hammerbeck has been working so hard with those guys.”

The invitational opted to do a mixed 1,600-meter relay, with each team running two girls and two boys. The Wolverines were able to place seventh (4:23.99). Emily Davidson, Sarah Hoffman, Collin Brown, and Colby Barr made up the mixed team.

All four had the biggest smiles on their faces on the podium,” said Snell. “Such a great and fun race that created quite the electric atmosphere to end such a memorable afternoon of so many top-notch efforts and performances.”

The Wolverines will head to Smethport to take on the Hubbers and the Northern Potter Panthers, then travel to Port Allegany on Friday for the Northern Tier League Championships.

Starting at $3.50/week.
