Prep posts softball win over Warren

ERIE — Cathedral Prep overcame an early 1-0 Warren lead to top the Dragons 5-1 on Tuesday in a Region 5 matchup.

Prep, formerly Villa Maria, improves to 5-1 overall and 3-0 in the region. Warren falls to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in Region 5. Both teams are in PIAA Class 4A.

“The little things,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart. “We stress doing the little things right and good things will happen. We let a few plays get us and need to hit the ball a little bit better and it’s a different outcome.”

Warren’s Carly Beers led off the game with a base hit and came around to score after singles from Alana Stuart and Lexi Hoffman.

Prep pitcher Madison Simmerman settled down to strike out the next five Lady Dragons and allowed just three more hits in the final six innings.

A walk and 3 straight infield errors led to Prep’s two first-inning runs. The Ramblers added a run in the second inning, and two more in the fourth.

Alana Stuart finished with nine strikeouts, three walks and two hit batters. She only allowed five hits, but Warren committed five errors.

Beers, Stuart and Hoffman finished with two hits each for Warren. No other Dragon had a base hit.

“It’s good to know we’re right there in all our region games,” said coach Stuart. “We just have to put it all together.”

Lilly Devore and Natasha Ferry had base hits in the junior varsity game. Devore also pitched three innings.

IKE FALLS AT COCHRANTON

COCHRANTON — The Eisenhower softball team made the long trip to Cochranton on Tuesday and fell 9-2.

Leading 3-2, Cochranton broke the game open with a six-run fifth inning as five different players drove in the runs.

The Lady Knights collected 11 hits, including three by Kailee Morrison. Alexis Pascuzzi and Julia Gesing each had multiple hits as well, and Samantha Childs stole four of Eisenhower’s 10 bases.

Emilie Jones was in the circle for the Knights, tossing a complete game and striking out one. She didn’t allow a walk.
