Conneaut walks-off Dragons 6-5
CONNEAUT — Warren lost a close one to Conneaut in its season opener, and the Dragons lost an even closer one on Thursday at Conneaut, 6-5 in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In addition, Warren all-region pitcher Alana Stuart left the game in the final inning due to injury.
“It’s a very simple game, and when you make it hard, it’s very frustrating. The easy outs have to be made,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart, whose Dragons are 4-6 overall and 3-4 in Region 5. Conneaut remains in second place in the region at 5-2. “The mentality just isn’t where it needs to be when we’re on defense. We have to do a better job.”
Alana Stuart doubled to open the top of the seventh inning and eventually scored to tie the game 5-5 on Emma Gray’s sacrifice fly to center.
Stuart battled in the pitching circle in the bottom half before being forced to leave the game’s final at-bat with an apparent shoulder injury. Conneaut’s Lainie Harrington greeted Warren reliever Lilly Devore with a game-winning single.
Stuart finished with eight strikeouts, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. All four of Conneaut’s third-inning runs were unearned after two strikeouts, two infield errors, a single and a home run to center field by Kylie Shrock.
Stuart’s two-run homer in the top of the first held up until the third. She finished 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs. Carly Beers and Miken Beers added two hits each for Warren, which had 10 team hits.
Linda Shepherd finished with six strikeouts for Conneaut (10-3).
Warren hosts Meadville on Thursday.
In a 4-0 junior varsity loss on Wednesday, Warren’s Natasha Ferry reached base twice, including a base hit.
