LEWISBURG — For everything Warren junior Hugh Harrison has accomplished in the sport of swimming, he earned his first state medal Wednesday at the PIAA Class 2A Championships at Bucknell University.
Harrison finished fourth out of 32 swimmers qualifying for the 200-yard individual medley. He was seeded sixth in the prelims earlier Wednesday in 1:53.18.
In the finals (in which the top eight swimmers earn medals), Harrison swam a blistering 1:50.96 that demolished his school record and District 10 championship meet times.
“Coming into the finals, I was honestly a little scared,” said Harrison. “I didn’t feel great and had an OK time in the morning. But I was so hyped up and had the most amount of adrenaline running through me at night. I just went into it with the mindset of having fun and trusting my training. It was probably the most competitive race of the whole meet and I am very happy with my time. Now for some more fun tomorrow.”
Competitive? The top four were separated by less than 1 second. Woobie Kupsky of MMI Prepatory School won the title in 1:49.99, followed by Joseph Gardner of Mount Pleasant High School in 1:50.24, Matthew Purcell of Northgate in 1:50.28 and Harrison’s 1:50.96.
Warren’s boys 200-yard freestyle relay and girls 200-yard medley relay didn’t qualify for the finals Wednesday.
Harrison has the fifth-best seed time of 32 in today’s 100-yard backstroke.
