Tarp Skunks hold on to edge Olean

OLEAN, N.Y. — Trailing 5-3 after six innings, Jamestown rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh and held on for an 8-7 win on Thursday night in a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League contest at Bradner Stadium.

Highlighting the decisive seventh inning for the Tarp Skunks were an RBI single by Dom Costello and a sacrifice fly by Anthony Trommer. Jamestown also took advantage of a passed ball, a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch to score the other runs.

Costello, James Dixon and Caleb Jordan all collected a pair of hits for the Tarp Skunks, who improved to 17-7 heading into tonight’s 7 p.m. home game, also against the Oilers, who dropped to 10-13.

Olean, which received two hits apiece from Thomas Bates, Grant Fournier and Cooper Tarlie, did make it interesting late. The Oilers scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 8-6 and tallied another run on a groundout in the ninth off closer Chase Beran. But with one out, Beran struck out the final two batters — the last one with the bases loaded — to earn the save, his third of the season. Joseph Santos (2-0), another Tarp Skunks reliever, was credited with the win after an effective four-inning stint.

Reliever Jaxson Ross (0-3) took the loss for Olean.
