Warren’s boys basketball team jumped out to a 27-12 first quarter on its way to a 72-52 Region 6 win on Tuesday at Warren Area High School.

“Tonight, we had five guys in double-digits (in scoring),” said Warren coach Jeff Berdine, whose Dragons are 10-6 overall and 3-2 in the region. “That’s kind of what this group is capable of, offensively.”

Warren’s Owen Becker finished with a team-high 18 points, including an emphatic dunk that brought a large Flannel Panel student section to its feet. Braylon Barnes scored 7 of his 17 points in the first quarter, Brady Berdine added 12 in the game, Tommy Nyquist 11, and Konnor Hoffman finished with 10 points starting in place of injured teammate Parks Ordiway.

“I thought we got the tempo where we wanted it early,” said coach Berdine, “and we worked on some of our different (defensive) traps, which is something we haven’t shown that much of… I thought the kids did a really good job keeping the ball out of the middle of the floor, putting pressure on them.”

Corry did connect on nine 3-pointers, including three in the second quarter to help the Beavers hang around.

“We wanted to be aggressive tonight,” said Berdine. “I told the kids that we have to focus better, we have to take care of the ball, but defensively, we want to scramble, we want to get out and create the tempo we wanted. They did us a little bit of a favor by pressing us early and that got us a lot of opportunities. The kids did a really good job getting Owen the ball when he was open… and he had a monster game on the offensive glass, I know that.”

Barnes had 6 points and Brady Berdine 5 in Warren’s 20-12 third quarter to help the Dragons build a 59-38 lead.

Markus Lambert finished with 21 points for Corry (9-8 overall and 1-4 in the region).

Earlier on Tuesday, Kamdyn Moon scored 11 points to lead the Beavers to a 35-16 junior varsity win.
