MILLCREEK — Warren divers didn’t walk away with gold, but two juniors stood on the medal stand, and “they all left as a team, happy, and smiling ear to ear,” said coach Brandon Gregg of Friday’s District 10 2A Championships at McDowell Intermediate High School.
Warren junior Laney Gatto finished fourth out of 14 divers and junior Izzy Heacox fifth, while sophomore teammate Ellie Yeager 10th, and freshman Bailey Williams 11th.
“It was stiff competition,” said Gregg. “The girls all changed top positions for the first few dives.”
In a six-dive format, Fairview’s Laney Veres, fifth a season ago, won her first D10 title with 255.25 points. Teammate Katie George was second with 223.85 points, and Corry’s Sylvia Elmquist third at 212.10. Gatto’s 205 points were good enough for fourth and Heacox’s 204.85 was that close to Gatto, as has been the case in recent meets.
“As a coach, I was given a golden ticket with these girls,” said Gregg, who coaches along with Megan Yeager. “So much raw talent and different backgrounds that just needed a little bit of refinement for diving has led to tremendous growth for these your athletes.”
