‘Dragons are ready’ despite swim losses at Prep
ERIE — Warren’s swimmers are “in a tired and beaten-up stage,” according to head coach Russ Beyer. “Prep whipped us pretty easily tonight,” he said of the boys’ 77-41 loss on Monday at Cathedral Prep’s Hallman Aquatic Center, and the girls’ 96-44 defeat.
That puts the Dragons right where he wants them, according to Beyer.
“The team, as a whole, is in a great place right now,” said Beyer, “swimming our best in a tired and beaten-up stage. Over the next 11 days, we will taper and go to districts with many more accolades to achieve.”
The District 10 2A boys and girls championships are March 3 and 4 at Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
“We should have several individual state qualifiers with a few relays as well,” said Beyer. “These Dragons are ready.”
Monday was a last chance to eke out a couple D10 qualifying times.
“We had two young ladies that just missed,” said Beyer. “Sarah Harvey swam her best race of the year in the 100 breaststroke, missed qualifying by .29. Eliza Brook swam her fastest of the year in the 100 backstroke, missed qualifying by .63.”
Also on Monday, Drake Niemitz won the boys’ 200-yard freestyle event by a little over a second in 1:51.05. Hugh Harrison won the 200 individual medley in 1:55.24 and the 100 free in 47.19. Jarod Peterson won the 50 free in 24.80 seconds and the 100 butterfly by .36 seconds in 58.09.
