3 Dragons advance to NW regionals

SHARON — And then there were three.

Warren sophomore Adika Fiscus finished fourth, and junior Ryan Fitzsimmons and senior Evan Swanson were both eighth to advance to next weekend’s Northwest Region 2A Wrestling Championships at Sharon High School.

The top eight in each weight class advanced this weekend at the District 10 Championships, also at Sharon, and although there were no sectional champs from Warren, “I thought we wrestled well,” said head coach Glenn Baldensperger.

“Adika avenged a loss against Lantz in the consi-semifinals,” he said.

To get to the third-place match at 107 pounds, Fiscus (26-9) earned an 8-2 decision over Cochranton senior Kyle Lantz. Lantz pinned Fiscus in the first round of the Fred Bell tournament a month ago in Grove City. Fiscus finished fourth, losing a 2-0 decision to Corry’s Steven Willis.

A little history was made in the championship match of the 107 weight bracket. Sierra Chiesa (31-4), a Northwestern sophomore, was the first female gold medalist in the history of the D10 2A Wrestling Championships.

In the very next weight bracket — 114 pounds — Fitzsimmons won two matches to finish eighth and advance to regionals beginning on Friday. Swanson, a senior in just his second year wrestling, also finished eighth at 172 pounds to move on.

“It will be one match at a time next weekend,” said Baldensperger, adding that the top four wrestlers in each regional weight class advance to states.

Starting at $3.50/week.
