Since 1945, only three people have worn the name tag “sports editor” of The Post-Journal.

Frank Hyde (1945-79), Jim Riggs (1979-2014) and Scott Kindberg (2015-present) have provided reliable, trustworthy, and award-winning sports news in communities across Chautauqua County. For more than 75 years, these three men have faithfully and conscientiously reported the youth, high school, collegiate and recreational sporting activities that are part of the spirit of this county.

Hyde was inducted into the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame in 1983. Riggs was honored with a 2016 selection. In 2023, Scott Kindberg will join his late media colleagues as a CSHOF inductee.

Kindberg was born in Jamestown in 1960 and has lived in the city his entire life. He is a 1979 graduate of Jamestown High School, a 1981 graduate Jamestown Community College and earned a journalism and communications degree from Point Park University in 1982.

In the summer of 1982, he served as the assistant general manager of the Jamestown Expos in the New York-Pennsylvania baseball league, working with general manager Dan Lunetta, a 2014 CSHOF inductee.

Kindberg began his employment at The Post-Journal in 1983. He served as a sports reporter until 1987 when he was promoted to assistant sports editor, succeeding Riggs who was named sports editor upon the retirement of Hyde.

Kindberg was chosen to lead the department when Jim Riggs retired as sports editor in 2014.

In 2020, Kindberg was handed the additional duties of sports editor of The Post-Journal’s sister publications, the Dunkirk OBSERVER and Warren Times Observer. As such, he is responsible — along with staff members Matt Spielman and Christian Storms — for putting out three separate sports sections that report on the sporting activities of those readership communities.

Kindberg has traveled throughout New York state following the successes of high school athletes from the Southern Tier for four decades. In addition, from 1987 through 2001, he was a beat reporter for the Buffalo Bills of the National Football League, covering their runs to four consecutive Super Bowls.

In addition to the thousands of articles and columns that he has written over his lengthy career, Kindberg has authored 10 books and is the co-editor of a book on the history of baseball in Jamestown, Our Game — From Unknowns to Tarp Skunks.

Kindberg has received 14 New York State Associated Press awards for excellence in journalism.
