Despite being swept by visiting Cathedral Prep on Monday at the Warren YMCA, the Dragons “gained a lot of confidence and momentum for the next month,” according to Warren coach Russ Beyer.

“Warren was winning (the girls meet) up to the (final) 400 free relay,” said Beyer, whose Lady Dragons were edged 95-90 by Prep. “They just had a little more depth at the end.”

In a 114-48 loss in the boys meet, Warren junior Hugh Harrison did manage to break two of his own school records, and defeat reigning District 10 champion and state medal winner Mitchell Bradford in the process. Harrison broke his own school records by winning the 100-meter backstroke in 58.17 seconds to Bradford’s 1:01.27. He also broke his own 200-meter individual medley mark in 2:09.90, ahead of Bradford.

“Since our boys team dropped to AA this year, I really think this meet was my message to the AA field that I am here and I am ready to battle for some District 10 titles,” said Harrison. “It also feels good to beat the district record holder by a decent margin, but nothing matters until March, and that’s what my eyes are set on.”

Warren’s Drake Niemitz also took two firsts in the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle.

“The girls’ team did tremendous,” said Beyer. “Everyone contributed to the score. A lot of best times — Violet Spiegel in breaststroke, June Kukhar in the backstroke, and Jen Giger in the 400 free.”

In 1-meter diving, Warren’s Laney Gatto and Izzy Heacox took 1-2; Lucy Harrison won the 100-meter breaststroke and the 100-meter butterfly with Summer Lucks right behind her; Katie Krogler won the 100-meter freestyle, just fingernails ahead of Leyna Irwin; and Kirsten Johnson won the 100-meter backstroke. The team of Harrison, Krogler, Lucks and Irwin won the 200-meter freestyle relay.

“Tonight was a fun meet,” said Beyer. “Very happy to be a part of it. The kids were challenged and they responded in a big way. The kids showed a lot of emotion and grit. They can’t wait until Thursday. Back at it again (at home versus McDowell).”
