SHEFFIELD — Sheffield fell to 5-6, while Elk County Catholic improved to 10-1 as the Crusaders rolled past the Wolverines 55-19 on Monday night.

Sheffield was able to stay within one in what was building up to be a defensive matchup going into the second quarter at 8-7. That was until Jordan Wasko went off, dropping 10 points, leading the Crusaders to outscore the Wolverines 14-2, and hold a 22-9 halftime lead.

“Today it seemed to be like we had some drop off,” said Sheffield head coach Jordan Copley of the declining play throughout the game. “First half I thought we played pretty strong defensively to be honest with you. From my perspective, we were where we were supposed to be. They even missed some shots they usually don’t miss but being in that position. But as the game went on, them pressuring us the way they did offensively, we got worn down, we made the mistakes, and they won the game.”

Things didn’t improve for the Wolverines in the second half, giving up another 6 to Wasko and 7 to Nussbaum to fall behind 35-16. The Crusaders unloaded in the fourth, putting up 20 more points while the press kept the Wolverines from gaining any offensive momentum, only scoring three.

“I hate to sound like a broke record, but we’ve said it again and again, mental toughness,” said Copley of the second half. “When the going gets tough and your body’s tired, can you maintain your mind? Can you do the things that matter?”

Wasko finished with a team high 22 points followed by Nussbaum’s 11. Mason Silvis led the Wolverines with 9 points.

“They’re a well-coached team,” said Copley. They’re very disciplined.”
