Oldtimers split twinbill in Springfield, Ohio
SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The Jamestown Area Oldtimers split a Sunday doubleheader with Springfield.
In the opener, Springfield managed only six hits against losing pitcher Ed Baldensperger, but a first-inning run was all the hosts needed to claim the victory.
The Oldtimers threatened in the third and fifth innings, but left the tying runs in scoring position each time.
In the second game, the Oldtimers prevailed 6-3 behind the pitching of Winston Woodard and Ron Thomas. Winston struck out three and picked off a runner, and Thomas hurled three shutout innings in relief and struck out four.
Thomas helped his own cause with three hits and two RBIs; and Wade Nelson, Dave Wortman and Doug Frank all had doubles.
The Oldtimers, who finished the regular season in second place in the National Division, will be back in back in action on Sept. 17 for a playoff date against a to-be-determined opponent.
