Warren’s girls tennis team took “a big step in the right direction” in a 3-2 win over Erie High on Thursday at Betts Park.

“Getting this region win under our belt is a step in the right direction and will give us the confidence we need to overcome our region-rival, Mercyhurst (Prep), next Tuesday,” said Warren coach Thomas Pellegrino. “We knew going into this one that it would be a close match. The last three matches with Erie have all come down to 3-2 scores and today was no different.”

At top singles, Warren’s Iris Kiehl lost to Enisa Siljkovic, 1-6, 2-6.

“Enisa has a tricky game with a lot of variety so it took a while for Iris to get into a rhythm today. I think next time we play them, this match will be much closer,” said Pellegrino.

At second singles, Grace Carr lost to Riley Gloystein, 4-6, 0-6.

“This match was fun to watch as Grace is an aggressive net player and Riley hits a big ball which led to some intense rallies and great points,” said assistant coach Travis Myler. “Riley is one of the top players in triple-A, and we were very happy with how Grace matched up with her today.”

At third singles, freshman Lucy Harrison defeated Mackenzie Bruce, 6-0 6-4.

“Lucy played with some fire today and put the pressure on her opponent early in the match,” said assistant coach Mike Kiehl. “We gave her a specific strategy and she executed it perfectly. This was a great win for Lucy.”

The Warren doubles, down 2-1, swept for the win.

Izzy Heacox and Kaelin Hatfield defeated Merisha Tamang and Arden Claudio, 6-0 6-2. At second doubles, Madalynn Perry and Winnie Wolf defeated Grace Lyle and Tristyn Righi, 6-1 6-1.

“Our doubles dominated from start to finish today and played very aggressive, leading to some quick wins to take the pressure off the singles players,” said Pellegrino. “Both pairs kept their foot on the gas the whole way through and were able to capture the first sets within 20 minutes of play.”
