Villa Maria hands Warren first loss
ERIE — The Warren and Villa Maria softball teams would have gone extra innings earlier this season had it not been for Alix Lytle’s three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 5-2 Dragons’ home win.
On Saturday, Maddie Simmerman’s two-run double tied Warren at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh, and Villa walked it off 8-7 in the bottom of the 10th inning on Lilli Beuchert’s bases-loaded infield single.
Villa is now 6-1 in Region 5 and the Victors hand Warren its first loss; the Dragons are 5-1 in the region.
“Errors in a game like this loses ball games and, unfortunately for us, that’s what happened,” said Warren coach Carissa Stuart. “For as well as we hit and Alana (Stuart) pitched, we should have won that game. We’re going to put it behind us and focus on the next game. There are a lot of region games left to be played. I’m happy with where we are; just have to keep getting better.”
Both pitchers — Warren’s Alana Stuart and Villa’s Jenna Wagner — went the entire way. Wagner got the win, giving up seven runs on 16 hits in 10 innings. She struck out 11 without a walk. Stuart allowed eight runs, but only three were earned, striking out 12 with 12 hits and five walks over 9 1/3 innings.
With the international tiebreaker rule, Villa’s Megan Kelly started on second base in the bottom of the 10th. After a walk and hit batter loaded the bases with one out, Kelly beat the throw home after Beuchert’s infield groundball.
Wagner stranded Warren’s runner on second base to start the 10th with three strikeouts.
Simmerman homered earlier in the game for Villa, which is a half-game ahead of the Dragons in the region standings. She finished 4 for 4 with four RBI.
Halle Kuzminski was 4 for 5 for Warren. Stuart and Alix Lytle added three hits each in the loss.
